Orthodontics has come a long way over the years, and Invisalign has become a popular option for discreetly and comfortably straightening teeth. But before you embark on orthodontic treatment, it’s natural to have questions. In this article, we answer the most frequently asked questions about Invisalign to help you better understand this orthodontic solution.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that uses clear, removable aligners (also called “aligners”) to correct the alignment of teeth and/or the relationship between the two jaws (bite). Unlike traditional braces, these aligners are virtually invisible and do not require a fixed, metal appliance.
How does the treatment work?
Invisalign treatment is based on a series of custom aligners that apply constant pressure to the teeth to gradually move them. Each aligner is worn for approximately 1 to 2 weeks before being replaced by the next series. The main stages of treatment are as follows:
- Initial consultation: assessment of your teeth by a professional.
- Optical impressions: using a digital scan, 3D impressions of your teeth are taken.
- Treatment plan: 3D modeling is used to plan each stage of the treatment and design the aligners.
- Manufacturing of the aligners: custom creation of your series of devices.
- Wearing the aligners: progressive replacement of the aligners until the end of treatment.
Who can benefit from invisible orthodontics?
Invisalign is suitable for many types of teeth alignment issues and malocclusions, including:
- Crowded teeth.
- Wide gaps between teeth.
- Crossbite.
- Overbite.
- Underbite.
- Open bite.
However, some more complex cases may require traditional orthodontic treatment. A dental exam will help determine if Invisalign is the right option for you.
How long does Invisalign treatment last?
The length of treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case. It is therefore impossible to determine the length of treatment without an exam. However, most treatments last between 12 and 24 months.
Factors that influence the length of treatment include:
- The severity of the orthodontic problem.
- Compliance with wearing the aligners (22 hours a day).
- The response of the teeth to movement.
Are the aligners really invisible?
Yes! They are made of a transparent and thin plastic, which makes them almost invisible once in the mouth. They are much more discreet than traditional metal braces.
Are the aligners uncomfortable?
It is more comfortable to follow a treatment with Invisalign than with a traditional device, because there are no wires or metal parts to irritate the mouth. However, a slight discomfort may be felt when changing aligners, because the pressure exerted on the teeth is then more intense. This sensation generally disappears after a few days.
Do you have to wear the aligners all day long?
Yes, for the treatment to be effective, you must wear the aligners at least 22 hours a day. Failure to follow these instructions may prolong treatment or even harm its success. The aligners should only be removed for:
- Eating and drinking (except water).
- Brushing and flossing your teeth.
Can you eat with the aligners in?
No. It is recommended that you remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water. Eating with your aligners in could damage them and cause stains.
Is Invisalign suitable for adults?
Yes! Invisalign is a popular orthodontic solution for adults. Indeed, it is a discreet and easy treatment to follow since it does not require any lifestyle changes. Although we more often see younger patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, it is never too late to do so. Adults can also enjoy the benefits provided, both in terms of the aesthetics of the teeth and the maintenance of oral health.
